How To Measure Roller shutters
The window rolling shutters are installed in several configurations ( i.e. attached to fascia/eaves or just above the window) depending upon the type of the windows at your home. Detailed below are the most common scenarios of the window types installed in Australian homes. Our range of roller shutters offers a practical, affordable, and effective means of increasing security in a given space. Please browse through the information provided below to guide you through the basics of roller shutter measurement and installation.
Scenario 1: The distance between the top of the window and the eaves/fascia is less than 300 mm
Height Measurement (in millimeters)
If the distance between the fascia and the window is less than 300 mm, the head-box/pelmet-box can be attached to the fascia. The total height of the shutter to be taken into consideration will be from the fascia to the window sill. Measure from both sides of the window and use the longest measurement as the final height.
Width Measurement (in millimeters)
Measure the structural opening (distance between the bricks) in mm. Take three measurements i.e. Top, Middle, and Bottom. Use the smallest of the three as the final width.
Scenario 2: The distance between the top of the window and the eaves/fascia is more than 300mm
Height Measurement (in millimeters)
If the distance between the fascia and the window is more than 300mm, customers can choose the positioning of the head box/pelmet box. The head-box can be mounted just above the window or up to the fascia. The price will vary according to the finished height of the shutter. We recommend mounting the head-box just above the window as it is unnecessary to go all the way up to the fascia. Add 250 mm to the window height to get the finished height.

Measure the structural opening (distance between the bricks) in mm. Take three measurements i.e. Top, Middle, and Bottom. Use the smallest of the three as the final width.
Scenario 3: The distance between the top of the window and the eaves/fascia is less than 300 mm
Height Measurement (in millimeters)
If the window is to the fascia, then the total height will be from the fascia to the window sill. The head-box in this case will cover part of the window which is unavoidable. The height of the window will determine the size of the head box. Measure from both sides of the window and use the longest measurement as the total height.
Width Measurement (in millimeters)
Measure the structural opening (distance between the bricks) in mm. Take three measurements i.e. Top, Middle, and Bottom. Use the smallest of the three as the final width.
Head-box sizes according to shutter height
If the total height is up to 1315 mm, then the head-box is 165 mm
If the total height is up to 1980 mm, then the head-box is 180 mm
If the total height is up to 2805 mm, then the head-box is 205 mm
If the total height is up to 3530 mm, then the head-box is 230 mm
Please pay much attention to some aspects when measuring roller shutter sizes:
Please make sure all the measurements are in millimeters.
If your doors or windows open outwards, could they be open when the roller shutter is installed? Add 300 mm to the total height, if there is space above the opening.
Do not forget that the roller shutter hangs down at least 55 mm into the guide rails, below the shutter box.
You need to measure the top, middle, and bottom within the reveal of the clear opening.
Guarantee that there is enough space for the roller shutter box and shutter guide rails on each side for on-wall installation(this is very important, otherwise, you can’t install your shutters).
Are there protruding door or window handles?
Top - The view of the roller shutter has been illustrated in this diagram. If the door or window handle is protruding out past the exterior wall, it will interfere with the operation of the shutter. There is no need to worry. We can supply or install a pair of Packers behind the guide rails which will overcome this problem. The packers are fixed to the wall and are custom-made according to the size required. The guide rails are then installed on top of these packers, allowing the shutter to be installed with enough space to provide the clearance for door handles. Color: The packers will be the same color as the rolling shutter or Guide rails. If customers want to choose a different color for packers, it has to be specified at the time of ordering. Cost: The packers required are not part of standard installation. If and when required, the additional cost is $38.50/meter including GST.
What if there is no window sill?
When the window roller shutter comes in a downward direction, it will stop and rest on the window sill. What if there is no window sill? If there is no window sill, we will supply and install a 50 x 24 mm angle. This angle is fixed to the Guide rails (tracks) from the front face, with 50 mm facing upwards and 24 mm facing inwards, thus providing the base for the roller shutter to stop and rest on. Color: The 50 x 24 mm angle comes in all the standard colors. Customers can choose the color to be the same as the roller shutter or Guide rails. Cost: The angles required are not part of standard installation. The 50 x 24 mm angle is sold at an additional cost of $16.50/meter including GST.

We used Oz Roller Shutters in December 2020 to install 14 shutters. It was one of the best decisions we made with regard to our home. Having our first level balcony facing the west where the suns sets we suffered for a couple of years from rain and heat hitting our glass windows and glass sliding doors. Even though we had refrigerated cooling it was still very warm in the house because of the heat from the sun. When it would rain it would be terrible. Everything on the balcony would be soaked and the floor would be wet and slippery. None of the above happens now. Our house stays cool in summer and warmer in winter without using the central heating as much.

We also had them installed on the ground level which makes us feel very safe. Pretty difficult for an intruder to come in when these heavy duty roller shutters are down. We cannot praise Sam Navi and their crew enough. They are so polite and willing to go that bit extra to make you happy. The reason I am writing this review so long after install is because we had another shutter installed recently and completely forgot to write a review after the initial install. We believe they look great but that's our opinion. They also have this great tool on their website where you are able to calculate how much it will cost you. I called other companies but found Oz Roller Shutters were much more competitive and consultative. Highly recommended.
We chose black surroundings because our window frames are black but you can choose whatever you like.
You won't be disappointed.
